Focus on the good stuff

This is a week to focus on the good stuff and avoid the negative. 

I was visiting with a sales team recently after being asked in by the owner as sales were down and the culture was being invaded by negativity and gossip. The office had an uncomfortable feel, people finding faults with each other and rather than looking at what was the "good stuff" they were focusing on everything they could find fault with.  It seems that when things get tough and stress builds, people tend to focus on what is wrong rather than what is right or good.  Left alone, this pervasive mood and tendency to gossip, would have become like a cancer and destroyed the team. The business owner recognised this and took ACTION. 

We got the team to build an appreciation list - yes we made a list of all the things they appreciated about;

the office

the boss

the brand

each other

their clients

their support team

We had a huge list of all the things they appreciated. It was a very powerful tool.

Their leader made a commitment to only focus on the positive and the team agreed to do the same. The mood switch in the office was like a light going on. The new culture is developing fast as all the team focus on the positive. Gossip and blaming no longer exist. Production has taken a leap, sharing of ideas has opened up again and people are listening to each other again.

Many people go looking for new strategies and ideas when the market changes. That may help in the short-term, however, the key to maintaining production in a tougher market is making sure your working environment is healthily motivational and focused on the good stuff.
