Commitment with a public demonstration!
Over the holidays we witnessed the Port of Tauranga Half Ironman at Mt Maunganui. At the front of the field the elite athletes fought a great battle and the winner was an 18 year old with a great future in the sport. These elite athletes were all in great condition, had the most expensive bikes and obviously had time to train almost full-time. 80% of the field was not made up of these elite athletes though. It was a huge collection of people of all shapes, sizes, speeds and ability who all had one thing in common: They decided to participate. They had trained to varying degrees and had prepared as best they thought they could. They knew they wouldn't win the race but they knew they could WIN THEIR RACE. They swam, they cycled and they ran. They persisted, many struggled, some waned in their commitment at times and they knew their efforts were visible. This was a very public demonstration of their commitment. Their goal was a Personal Best or simply to finish. Everyone that finished achieved their personal goal.
Not only was their goal written down and a plan prepared, they made their effort and result public. Their very being at the start line was a public statement of their intent.
