YOUR TERRITORY IS NO LONGER GEOGRAPHIC!
In recent weeks I have heard many tales of "Protecting my patch" in those markets where listings are tight or sales are slow.
Yes NZ has two markets: Not enough listings in some markets and low sales numbers in others. In each case we see people trying to protect their patch as the pressure comes on.
The only "patch, territory" you have left is found in two places and it will no longer be your franchise territory, your "farm" area, your protected little patch, where you have exclusive rights to market yourself geographically. Those days are now gone and you need to realise these two things now manage your business:
1. Your Reputation within your database and the marketplace within and outside the territory you thought you had. There are no longer any geographic boundaries to doing business. If you have a business model that restricts activity geographically, you will start to lose ground and market share, if it is not happening already.
2. Your Database and how you relate to it.
Remember, if you do any shopping or research on-line, then so do your clients, potential clients and customers.
Rule 1 in this realm: The Internet has NO BOUNDARIES, NO TERRITORIES, NO PREFERENCES! Distance is DEAD!
So what is your strategy to make sure your REPUTATION brings your preferrals, as they can come from anywhere now. If you live in the land of "That's my patch, that's my territory", your business is increasingly at risk.
I have often quoted my observation over the years:
"Protection creates mediocrity." Have fun creating a strategy to make sure your reputation and your database fuel your business from now on!
